PAYE/UIF/SDL Registrations

Employees’ Tax refers to the tax required to be deducted by an employer from an employee’s remuneration paid or payable. The process of deducting or withholding tax from remuneration as it is earned by an employee is commonly referred to as PAYE.

An employer who is registered or required to register with SARS for PAYE and or Skills Development Levy (SDL) purposes, is also required to register with SARS for the payment of Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) contributions to SARS.

SDL is a levy imposed to encourage learning and development in South Africa and is determined by an employer’s salary bill. The funds are used to develop and improve the skills of employees. SDL is only registered when the annual salary bill exceeds R500 000.

Contact us for more information on UIF, PAYE, and SDL.

VAT Registrations

VAT is an indirect tax on the consumption of goods and services in the economy. Revenue is raised for the government by requiring certain businesses to register and to charge VAT on the taxable supplies of goods and services. These businesses become vendors that act as agents for the government in collecting VAT.

Customs Registrations & Clearing Agents

Other than a traveler, no person may import goods into, or export goods from, the Republic of South Africa unless that person is registered as an importer or exporter, and is represented by a registered agent in the case of an importer or exporter that is not located in the Republic.

Public Benefit Organisations (Tax Exception)

An NPC or NPO can apply to SARS for Tax-exemption status, known as a PBO (Public Benefit Organisation). This will allow the company to take advantage of tax benefits to reduce their tax burden and obtain certain benefits. Once registered as a PBO, donations made to the non-profit company are deductible from the donor’s tax liability (sec 18A of ITA). It should be kept in mind that there are strict requirements.

Public Officer Appointment

In order to maintain company Tax profiles, the company’s representative (most of the time the Director) must be appointed as a public officer with SARS.

Register for eFiling

As a registered taxpayer, you can sign-up to use the SARS eFiling service, which allows you not only to file a return, make payments to SARS or request a tax clearance certificate but also gives you access to many other benefits via an electronic platform.

De-Registration of Tax Types

When your company is seized to trade, it is advised to deregister the Tax types with SARS to avoid future penalties and interest charges.
